Early Childhood Development: Understanding Your Child’s World (Aged 0–5), is designed to help you better understand your child’s development during the important early years and give you practical tips and confidence to support their learning and wellbeing.
Presented by Melissa Lynch, proud Ballardong Noongar woman, Clinical Midwife Specialist and Endorsed Midwife, this session offers a unique opportunity to learn from one of Australia’s leading Aboriginal midwives.
Recognised with the 2025 NAIDOC Nursing and Midwifery Award and the Excellence in Aboriginal Health Award, Melissa combines evidence-based knowledge with a culturally safe approach that celebrates the strengths of First Nations children, families and communities.
The first five years of life are a time of incredible growth and learning. Together, we’ll explore what to expect at different developmental stages, how everyday moments and interactions help your child learn and thrive, and why play, connection and secure attachment are so important.
We’ll also discuss language development, developmental milestones, and when it’s a good idea to seek extra support if you have concerns. Most importantly, this session is designed to build your confidence as a parent by reminding you that every child develops at their own pace.
By the end of the session, you’ll:
- Gain a better understanding of developmental milestones from birth to five years.
- Learn how secure attachment supports your child’s lifelong wellbeing.
- Discover simple, play-based activities you can do at home to support your child’s development.
- Feel more confident supporting your child’s language and learning.
- Know when and how to seek advice if you have concerns about your child’s development.

Sharon Leisk is a Business Analyst, Power Platform Developer and digital transformation specialist with more than 30 years of experience delivering technology solutions across government, mining, emergency services and the not-for-profit sector.
After leaving school at just 14, Sharon built a successful career through a non-traditional pathway, driven by a passion for solving real-world problems and making technology more accessible to everyone.
She is the founder of Jindaya, an initiative creating culturally safe digital skills pathways for First Nations women. Sharon is also an active mentor, community volunteer and photographer, and is currently based in Vietnam, where she continues to explore how technology, creativity and community can come together to create meaningful opportunities.
